My favourite story is:

I was on holiday in Borneo and went on a trip to an uninhabited island.
I had taken Scales of Gold with me to read - as being the most appropriate to take a tropical jungle bordering a palm fringed beach.

I sat on the warm sand - with monkeys chattering around me, when another lady - one of the ten people who came out to the island - came up the beach and said "Do you like Dorothy Dunnett's books? I've been reading them for years but never met anyone else who had".

Well, that encounter led to a great couple of hours discussion. It absolutely made my day!

The lady, then living in Hong Kong, now lives near Edinburgh!
