Dear all,

some weeks ago I had sent the good news that an editor I know thought about
taking on the publishing of DD´s books for the German market.

Well, I was asked to keep you informed about the project and must inform
anyone interested that the editor and her boss have decided against it.

The boss said after reading into the books that Lymond drove him crazy -
well, this remark is not completely novel to some of this list, is it - but
the editor wouldn´t take this as a proper argument since she saw the
romantic and adventourous value of above all the LC. But in the end the
calculation did the project in - 6 books, of which at least 4 would have to
be translated afresh, each with an average of 600 densely packed pages
(which makes them ca. 1100 pages in German translation if nothing is cut),
the costs of a good translator (which would be tied for months on end - not
easy to find a translator for such a job, it should be an enthusiast with no
need to earn his/her bread via this job) as well as a good editor (though
editors are notouriously undervalued), resumé: the costs would be crippling.

And any reader hooked by the books would have to suffer the same ordeal as
all of you who had to await the LC as they were published originally
(60s-70s) will well remember.

And most of all, they fear that in these times it´s not one of those series
that get the ordinary reader hooked as other authors of huge & rich books
like e.g. Gabaldon do via their more easy style.

So the editor informed me they are not going to do it. I wasn´t too
surprised by the vote against doing it, though of course, it´s sad. She
said, she´ll keep an eye on the series and if - a great if - times are
better again for experiments (financially), she´d be most happy to try
again.

That´s all,
Doris in Munich

Martine
